Give InKind is honored to feature Stephanie McKercher, RDN, of The Grateful Grazer. Here, she considers what snacks are best for women and men facing breast cancer.
We can all benefit from choosing balanced snacks but women with breast cancer are especially in need of nutritious and convenient options. Keeping healthy snacks on hand is a great way to keep hunger at bay while providing the protein and energy that’s needed to support treatment and optimal recovery.
These five easy (and delicious) snacks are great for storing in your desk at work or carrying along in your bag to doctor’s appointments and/or chemotherapy treatment sessions.
- Brad’s Plant-Based Organic Crunchy Kale Variety Pack and other cruciferous vegetables are rich sources of a group of phytonutrients called the glucosinolates. These compounds are currently being further studied for potential anti-cancer effects and have been associated with decreased risk for certain cancers. Kale is also a great source of fiber to promote optimal digestions and improve satiety.
- Spirulina Sesame Go Raw Seed Bars. These nutritious bars are made with blue-green algae called spirulina that has demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. More studies are needed, but preliminary evidence also shows that spirulina may specifically inhibit breast cancer cell growth.
- Essential Living Foods Superfood Trail Mix. This trail mix is packed with energizing fats, protein, and healthy carbohydrates to support energy levels. Mulberries and goji berries also pack in an especially high antioxidant punch to help prevent cellular damage from free radicals.
- Seapoint Farms Dry Roasted Edamame with Sea Salt. There are a lot of myths surrounding soy but luckily, there is no need for women with breast cancer to avoid protein-rich tofu, tempeh, and edamame. Studies even show that consuming soy may help reduce breast cancer recurrence and mortality.
- Evo Hemp Cherry Walnut Antioxidant Bar. This antioxidant-rich bar can help prevent free radical damage by protecting our healthy cells. It also contains plant-based protein and essential omega-3 fatty acids from hemp seeds.
